My aunt put me as her life insurance beneficiary, how does that work?

My aunt put me as her life insurance beneficiary. She is quite old, 90. I hate to ask this, but what will happen if something should happen? Is her life insurance company just going to send me a check? Once again, no disrespect to my aunt, just, if something should happen, I want to make sure what she intended happens.
